Ryan (RJ) Lengerich enters his third season as an assistant coach for Marquette Volleyball after joining the staff on July 1, 2016.
Lengerich joins Marquette after spending three seasons as the men's head coach at Mount St. Joseph's University in Cincinnati, Ohio where he is the program's all-time leader with 53 wins. The 2015 MCVL Coach of the Year led the program to its first national ranking in 2015 and coached its first All-American.
"Ryan (RJ) comes with a great deal of experience across multiple levels," Theis said. "I've seen his Mount St. Joseph's team play and was incredibly impressed. He took over a program that hadn't been successful and turned it into a ranked team in just two years. Ryan's presence in the gym and demeanor on the sideline is exactly what we are looking for in a coach."
Lengerich started at Mount St. Joseph in 2014 and inherited a program that had just five wins in its first three years. His first season at the helm saw a complete turnaround with 16 wins in 2014 and improved to a 19-9 record in 2015, including a second-place finish in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League regular season and a trip to the conference tournament championship game. In 2016, Lengerich led his team to 18 wins and a consistent top-15 national ranking, reaching a program-best No. 11 that same season.
"I am humbled for the opportunity to join the volleyball staff at Marquette University," Lengerich stated. "Coach Theis and the staff have built a tremendous program and I am excited at the chance to help the student-athletes develop on the court and as people in a way that represents the University's mission. This is a great honor."
Lengerich graduated from Indiana University with a journalism degree in 2003 and earned his masters degree in strategic leadership from Black Hills State University in 2014.
Lengerich and his wife, Marisa, have three children, Kaden, Reid and Keeley.
